The anniversary of the NHS represents an important time for reflecting on the dedication of staff and volunteers as well as how the service continues to collaborate and adapt, says one of Scotland’s leading healthcare innovation bodies

The health service will celebrate its 78th anniversary on Sunday 5 July, marking a key date in the provision of universal healthcare — and an opportunity to recognise the vast strides made since 1948.

InnoScot Health has been working in partnership with NHS Scotland, industry, and academia to accelerate ideas for better patient outcomes for almost 25 years.

The organisation continues to celebrate and support Scotland’s long line of health and social care innovators and is urging participation in community events, exhibitions, and presentation of staff awards across the country to mark the special date.

Head of Innovation Commercialisation, Gillian Henderson said: “As we celebrate the NHS turning 78, it’s easy to dwell on the challenges, but we also live in transformative times where innovation that could only be dreamed of back in 1948 is an everyday reality.

“The health service has come so far. We now take for granted incredibly accurate robotic surgery, MRI scanners, ultrasound, and wearables, amid an ever-evolving innovation ecosystem including the likes of precision medicine, AI diagnostics, telecare, and drones.

“This anniversary offers an opportunity for staff, patients, and the public to mark significant progress over the past 78 years and to look forward to what healthcare will look like in the future.

“The pace of change is accelerating in so many ways, with NHS Scotland’s 180,000+ staff routinely delivering such vital care and remaining keen to improve their capabilities, whether by utilising efficient new ways of working or realising their own ideas through collaborative innovation support.

“That ability to adapt and evolve in innovative ways is an inspiring thought with dedicated staff who continue to want to make a difference offering so much talent and experience.”

InnoScot Health is part of a collaborative group of organisations supporting Scottish participation in the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme (CEP).

CEP is the biggest entrepreneurial workforce development programme of its kind. Started in 2016, it is open to both clinical and non-clinical NHS staff — including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, allied health professionals, managers, and support staff.

The NHS Scotland Event 2026 will be taking place at the Technology & Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow on Monday 21 September with a theme of ‘Transforming Health and Care Services through Collaboration’.

Nominations are also now open for Scotland’s Health Awards 2026, taking place on Thursday 12 November at Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange with an innovation category included. The awards will celebrate those working across NHS Scotland and its partners in delivering high quality health and social care services to the people of Scotland.
