Paul Swinton, Air Ambulance Paramedic (Scottish Ambulance Service) and Neil Sinclair, Assistant Medical Director (Northern Ireland Ambulance Service) shortlisted for Innovation Award

Adult SCRAM™ (Structured CRitical Airway Management) Bag is an innovative solution to pre-hospital emergency airway management that enhances performance in both pre-hospital and hospital environments by reducing error, time to intervention and cognitive load.

Invented by Paul and Neil with support from SHIL and the Scottish Ambulance Service, it was officially launched in 2014. Recent clinical trials have positively demonstrated the value of SCRAM™ in reducing delay to airway management, with a 29% reduction in time taken to prepare equipment evidenced.

The benefits of Adult SCRAM™ have also supported the recent development of an extended portfolio of products, including Paediatric and Paediatric EMS variants (created in collaboration with Dr Jon McCormack, Consultant in Paediatric Anaesthesia and Critical Care Retrieval, NHS Lothian), Tactical SCRAM™, Rx SCRAM™ and Tactical Rx SCRAM™.

Commenting on the announcement, Graham Watson, Executive Chairman, SHIL said: “This recognition builds on the positive evolution of the SCRAM™ portfolio and is testament to the talent, commitment and passion of the inventors Paul and Neil. Their idea has translated into a range of products improving patient care not only in Scotland but around the world. I’m extremely proud SHIL has been part of this success story and wish Paul and Neil every success on the evening.”
